Skyline Drive Self-Guided Audio Tour

A self-guided audio tour lets you explore Skyline Drive at your own pace while learning about the park’s history, geology, and wildlife. For gluten-free travelers, this format offers complete flexibility over timing and meal breaks. If you’re happy just driving and stopping at overlooks, you don’t need a tour, but if you like context, it adds value.

How It Works

Download the tour app before arriving (cell service is unreliable inside the park). The audio plays automatically based on your GPS location as you drive. Stop whenever you want, take breaks at overlooks, and resume when ready.

The full 105-mile route takes 4-5 hours without stops. Most families complete a section rather than the entire drive.

Why This Works for Gluten-Free Travelers

  • No fixed schedule means you control meal timing
  • Pack a cooler and stop at any overlook for a picnic
  • Skip crowded restaurant times entirely if preferred
  • Flexibility to drive to off-park restaurants if needed

Food Considerations

Bring your own food. Overlooks have no facilities, just scenic pull-offs. Some have picnic tables; others require eating in your car or on a blanket. On our drive, we stopped at several overlooks to eat from our cooler rather than relying on park restaurants.

The Big Meadows and Skyland areas have restaurants if you want a sit-down meal, but pack backup food regardless. Restaurant hours vary seasonally and kitchens can be busy during peak times.

Note: Call ahead to confirm restaurant hours and current gluten-free options before relying on them.

Logistics

  • Download the tour app before entering the park
  • Fill your gas tank, limited stations inside
  • Entrance fee required (America the Beautiful passes accepted)
  • Speed limit is 35 mph throughout
  • Restrooms at visitor centers and major waysides
